One of our great family activities is the scenic and historic railroad in Georgetown, Colorado. The Georgetown Loop Railroad tour is a great trip for those looking to sit back enjoy the incredible Rocky Mountain views and take in some history along the way.
The beauty of the mountains will take your breath away as an old-time historic steam locomotive chugs its way into the gorgeous canyon before passing by historic remains of several gold and silver mines. Continue on your trip over four different bridges spanning the Clear Creek River. One of these bridge transfers will be the famous Devil’s Gate High Bridge! This incredible bridge is truly a wonder to see and travel over as the view from the middle will be irreplaceable.
As you roll through the steep cliffs and over deep valleys, you’ll learn about the rich mining history of the Georgetown area. From the gold and silver booms of the 1800’s to the foundation of the railroad, and into the modern era where tourism provides the main draw (although there are still working mines in the area!) to Georgetown.
In addition to the relaxing and scenic train ride, the Georgetown Loop Railroad tours also features an optional tour of the Lebanon Silver mine. This walking tour will take explorers five hundred feet into a mine tunnel which was bored by hand in the 1870’s. Your tour guide will highlight rich veins of silver and tell you all about life as a miner in the 1800’s.
This trip is the perfect way to really experience Colorado's Rocky Mountain scenery as well as the rich history that surrounds the area. The low-key pace of the tour means it’s a great addition to a family white water rafting trip on Clear Creek or a family zip line tour.
