Christmas in Colorado

The Christmas season is a time of year many people look forward to. When most people picture their ideal Christmas, they imagine snow covered trees, beautiful sparkling lights, and a jolly Santa. Colorado is the idyllic place to spend your holidays, since every quaint mountain town across the high country is picture perfect the month of December.  The Rocky Mountains are draped in snow, and Colorado loves to celebrate the holiday season with some fun and very unique traditions.

Breckenridge’s Race of the Santas

Head out to Breckenridge early in December (the 5th) and check out the annual Santa Race.  If running isn’t your favorite, observing the madness is just as great.  Hundreds of people sprinting around town in funny Santa getups will get you in the Christmas spirit. Breckenridge is a great destination over the winter season.  This old Victorian style town is the picture perfect vision of holiday cheer, complete with snowcapped mountains and twinkling lights.

Denver’s Parade of Lights

If you’re more of a city slicker and sticking to the front range, Denver has some great Christmas traditions as well. On December 1st and 2nd, check out the Parade of Lights. This festivity celebrates all holiday fun, with marching bands at the of the march followed by decorations ranging from lovely lights to garish décor. You’ll find yourself laughing and smiling as the locals come out in full force for the amusement of those watching. Local vendors provide food and drink as well, so make a day of this event!

Colorado Ballet – The Nutcracker

For a more traditional celebration, head over to the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver, CO and check out the annual Nutcracker ballet. You can get dressed up to the nines and have a fun night out on the town with some loved ones… really, what more could you want during the holiday season? Beginning on November 25th and ending December 24th, you have your choice of when to check out this critically acclaimed ballet.

The Polar Express in Golden

A classic tradition for children was reading the Polar Express with their family every year. Wishes of riding the train to the North Pole and wondering what it would be like were common thoughts at bedtime the night before Christmas.  Well, Golden, CO makes those dreams come true!  Get on your pajamas and head to the Colorado Railroad Museum to ride the Polar Express yourself, drink hot cocoa, and even meet Santa at the “North Pole.” Make sure you pre order ticket, as they tend to sell out far ahead of time.

Georgetown Market

December 10th, take your family up into the mountains and visit the Georgetown Market.  Georgetown prepares for this every year by decking out the streets in Christmas décor.  Walking through town is essentially walking into a winter wonderland, complete with the smell of roasted chestnuts wafting through the air.
